About Me
I avoided English at every turn throughout my middle and high school years. Even for class participation, seldom were my peers lucky enough to hear me stumble over words like ‘Tsunami’ and ‘Anemone’.
As a newborn, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s. Following that came extra reading and writing assistance until 5th grade. I’ll never forget my father laboring over ‘W’. “Come on Jake. It’s double U. Get it? Two U’s. Double U!” So it wasn’t a mystery why I spent those years of my life doing the minimum, hiding from something that always made me feel stupid.
Then came college and all its eye-opening wonder. I learned that writing isn’t too scary after all. That it’s nothing more than the process of transferring felt experience and thought into an immutable shareable medium. Easy! So I burned those ELA argumentative essays to dust and started crafting creative works. Beginning as a blogger, I ran multiple blogs for several years. Then I began experimenting with short stories and poetry. And now I write LTEs and speculative fiction novels.
Using my sociology degree in ways that my former professors would surely kick and shout in protest, I’m in my early twenties brewing stories ranging from obscure to relatable, deep to satirical. Willing to travel into the darkness, I draw from personal experience and cultural awareness to bring out the complexity of life; within these stories, I find a voice in shedding light on society’s tropes and presenting rich questions within narrative allegories.
If this interests you, great! If not… (dangit). Feel free to learn about my novels and blog which contains short stories, poetry, and strange ideas. There’s also a virtual art gallery if you get tired of all these words.
Have a great day!
“Outside the windows the day was bright: golden sunshine, blue sky, pleasant wind… I wanted to punch the happy day in the face, grab it by the hair, and beat it until it told me what the hell it was so happy about.” Ilona Andrews
